Zim GBC Sports News

BULAWAYO – Highlanders Football Club has officially confirmed the receipt of a second payment of US$250,000 from businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo, bringing the total funds received to US$500,000.

This latest tranche is part of a larger US$1 million donation pledged by Sir Chivayo to support the club throughout the 2025 season. According to a club statement released on Tuesday, all funds are being managed through a curator and held in a trust account.

In a statement signed by the Club’s Executive Chairman, Retired Colonel R. Mhlophe, Highlanders detailed how the significant financial injection is being utilized.

“The fund has largely been used to finance the player’s welfare; including winning bonuses, travel expenses and match allowances,” the statement read.

It was further revealed that part of the money is earmarked for infrastructure development, specifically “to upgrade the training pitches and build a perimeter wall at the Highlanders clubhouse.”

The club expressed profound gratitude for the support, stating it believes the contribution will positively impact the team’s morale and on-field performance.

“The Club would like to greatly appreciate the generosity and support from Sir Chivayo,” Chairman Mhlophe stated.

“The club sincerely appreciates this kind gesture and continues to look forward to further support, promised by Mr Chivayo.”

This substantial donation from Chivayo is seen as a major boost for one of Zimbabwe’s most storied football clubs, providing crucial financial stability for both immediate operational costs and long-term infrastructural projects.
