BULAWAYO – The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has reinstated its passenger train service between Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, ending a four-year suspension that began during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The service resumed operations on Friday evening, with the first train departing Bulawayo Station at 19:00 and scheduled to arrive in Victoria Falls at 10:00 on Saturday. The return journey will depart Victoria Falls on Sunday at 19:00, arriving in Bulawayo on Monday at 10:00.

An NRZ official confirmed the development, stating,

“The restoration of this key route marks a significant milestone in our efforts to revive domestic tourism and enhance connectivity across the country. We are committed to providing affordable and reliable transport options for both local commuters and international visitors.”

The economy class fare for the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls route has been set at US$9 per adult, positioning it as a budget-friendly alternative for travelers heading to one of Zimbabwe’s premier tourist destinations.

In addition to this service, NRZ continues to operate the Harare-Mutare passenger route, which runs weekly with an economy fare of US$5 per adult. The Harare-Mutare service departs every Friday at 20:00, arriving in Mutare at 06:00 on Saturday, with the return journey on Sunday at 20:00.

The resumption of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls route comes as welcome news to tourism stakeholders.

“This train service provides a scenic and affordable travel option that will undoubtedly boost domestic tourism,” said a tourism operator in Victoria Falls.

“The route passes through some of the most beautiful landscapes in western Zimbabwe, offering travelers a unique experience.”

The revival of intercity passenger services forms part of NRZ’s broader strategy to rehabilitate its infrastructure and restore its role as a key transport provider.

Despite challenges including aging infrastructure and limited funding, the parastatal remains optimistic about its recovery trajectory.
