Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Frederick Shava has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to heritage-based Education 5.0, emphasizing curriculum reforms that prioritize local content and industry-related skills grounded in Zimbabwean cultural heritage.

Speaking during the Zimbabwe Open University’s silver jubilee book launch titled Open Doors, Open Minds: ZOU’s Silver Jubilee Reflections, Minister Shava outlined the philosophy behind the educational approach.

“This strategic approach ensures that our higher education sector supports both our economic growth as well as upholds our cultural sovereignty, thereby empowering our people to shape their future through education,” Shava stated.

The Minister explained that the heritage-based Education 5.0 initiative was designed to dismantle colonial-era educational limitations and create an environment where indigenous knowledge integrates with modern science to generate innovative societal solutions.

“Heritage-based education 5.0 also calls upon us to root our curriculum in the rich culture and history of our nation. To do this effectively, we must develop concepts and produce literature that is culturally relevant, that is contextually grounded and that is intellectually rigorous,” he emphasized.

Minister Shava also praised ZOU for its role in promoting accessibility and inclusivity in higher education through its decentralized model.

“ZOU has become a valuable beacon of hope for numerous individuals who might otherwise have been deprived of access to conventional brick and mortar institutions,” he noted, highlighting the university’s establishment of regional campuses in every province and district centers.

The Minister commended the institution’s alignment with the government’s educational vision, particularly through its STEM programs and research initiatives.

“We applaud the institution for its unwavering commitment and dedication to academic excellence and the strategic initiatives implemented through bolstering of faculty qualifications, research advancement, innovation and, indeed, community engagement,” Shava said.

The event celebrated ZOU’s 25 years of expanding educational access across Zimbabwe while maintaining academic standards consistent with the nation’s development goals.
