Family Demands Justice After Fungai Nhau Killed in Mine Shooting Incident

MUDZI – The family of Fungai Nhau is calling for criminal prosecution after he was fatally shot in an incident involving employees of Shuhi Mine, despite receiving a US$6,500 payment from the company.

According to a death agreement document seen by Zim GBC News, the mine and the grieving family reached a settlement where the company would pay a total of US$6,500. The breakdown shows US$3,000 was allocated per head for the adults, and US$2,000 for fees related to three children.

The document, signed by Chief Nechombo’s secretary and other local witnesses, confirms the amount “was paid” to the family. However, this settlement has not quelled demands for justice.

In a public call to action, the family and their supporters are urging the Zimbabwean legal system to go beyond the financial settlement.

“We call on the Zimbabwean legal system to act decisively,” a family representative stated.

“Criminally prosecute the employees responsible for this murder. Hold the company accountable for enabling an environment of negligence.”

They argue that the payment is a token that cannot replace a human life and are demanding fair compensation that truly reflects lost income, dependents, and grief.

“Zimbabwe cannot allow a life to be reduced to a small payment. Justice must be equal for all, whether the crime is committed by a foreigner or a Zimbabwean,” the representative added.

The case has also drawn attention to the legal distinctions between civil settlements and criminal liability. Legal experts note that while financial compensation can be part of a civil resolution, it does not absolve individuals or entities from criminal prosecution for acts such as murder.

Authorities have yet to announce any criminal charges related to the shooting death of Fungai Nhau.
