UNICEF Sounds Alarm on Youth Mental Health Crisis in Zimbabwe

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a urgent call for a heightened focus on the mental well-being of Zimbabwean youth, warning that a silent crisis of stress, anxiety, and depression is gripping the younger generation.

Etona Ekole, the UNICEF Zimbabwe Country Representative, highlighted that many young people are suffering in silence without adequate support. She stressed the critical need for immediate action to address the growing concern.

“There is a concerning rise in stress, anxiety, and depression among the youth,” Ekole stated.

“We must prioritize creating open dialogues, robust support systems, and, most importantly, accessible mental health services for young people.”

Observers and mental health experts directly link the deteriorating mental health among youths to socio-economic pressures. They identify the crushing weight of widespread unemployment and pervasive poverty as primary triggers for the increase in mental health challenges.

The call to action underscores the need for a multi-faceted approach to safeguard the mental and psychological future of the nation’s youth.
