MDC-T President Mwonzora Faces Arrest Over US$3,500 Child Maintenance Arrears

HARARE – MDC-T President Douglas Mwonzora is facing an outstanding warrant of arrest after defaulting on child maintenance payments, accumulating arrears of US$3,500 for his 10-year-old son, according to court documents.

The warrant was issued by a Harare magistrate nearly two months ago, but police are yet to execute it. Mwonzora was ordered in February 2024 to pay US$500 monthly for his son’s upkeep and school fees, but has failed to make payments for seven months from March to September 2025.

The child’s mother, Getrude Chuma, expressed frustration with the police’s delay in serving the warrant.

“I am not happy with Police at Harare Central for failing to serve the warrant on Mwonzora for the third time,” Chuma told the Masvingo Mirror.

When contacted for comment, Mwonzora denied knowledge of the arrest warrant.

“I haven’t received the warrant of arrest you are talking about. I don’t deserve any warrant. This is a sniff campaign,” the opposition leader stated, while acknowledging the existence of the civil case.

National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, told the Masvingo Mirror he would investigate why the warrant hadn’t been executed, but no explanation had been provided by the time of publication.

The case, registered under Harare Central CR M389, remains unresolved as the warrant continues to go unserved nearly two months after its issuance.
