BULAWAYO – A scheduled performance of Asante Mo and Siyaya in Concert at the Bulawayo Theatre was postponed on Friday evening following the tragic death of its invited guest, Hon. Desire “Moyoxide” Moyo, in a road accident.
Moyo, a celebrated poet, arts organiser, and the legislator for Nkulumane, was killed early Friday morning when the vehicle he was travelling in collided with an elephant near Shangani. He was 45 years old, a day shy of his 46th birthday.
In a statement released to Zim GBC News, the production team behind 50 Dates at the Theatre confirmed the postponement, paying tribute to the late artist.
“We regret to announce that tonight’s scheduled performance has been postponed following the untimely passing of Hon. Desire Moyo, affectionately known as Moyoxide,” the statement read.
“Hon. Moyo was more than a supporter of the arts; he was a voice for the creative community, a mentor to many, and a friend of the theatre. His guidance and encouragement helped shape many artistic paths, including our own.”
The news has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s creative sector, prompting an immediate outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues, friends, and admirers who remembered him as a dedicated advocate, a generous mentor, and an inspirational figure.
“In recognition of his life and work, we will pause tonight’s performance and stand with fellow artists in mourning and remembrance,” the production team’s statement continued.
“New dates for the show will be announced shortly. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues in the arts, and all who were moved by his work and presence. May he rest in peace.”
Mourners are currently gathered at the Moyo family home, House Number 11732, Nkulumane 11, Bulawayo.
The stage at the Bulawayo Theatre remains dark tonight in memory of one of the nation’s most respected artistic voices.
