BULAWAYO – It was business as usual at the Delta Bus Depot in Bulawayo on Thursday afternoon, despite the tragic news that a Delta bus travelling to Zimbabwe from Johannesburg was hijacked in South Africa earlier in the day, resulting in two passengers being shot dead.

While the incident sent shockwaves through social media, a Zim GBC News crew found hundreds of passengers at the depot awaiting their journeys, largely unaware of the morning’s events.

The scene was characterised by the typical commuter hustle, with vendors and departure announcements filling the air.

When asked, most passengers confirmed they had not heard about the hijacking and the fatal shooting. Staff members at the depot, however, wore sombre expressions and confirmed the tragedy had occurred.

Despite the grim news, the depot maintained its operations and loyal customers shared their resigned perspectives.

“These crooks do this every year; they are now looking for money for the festive season,” one passenger remarked, highlighting a perceived pattern of increased criminal activity during the holiday period.

Another passenger, reflecting on the inherent risks of cross-border travel, stated,

“We travel by the grace of God with these buses.”

Some Bulawayo residents gathered at the station to verify the rumours, while others took to social media to express their outrage.

Many online commentators blamed the bus company for a perceived lack of security, noting that such hijackings have been a recurring issue for years.

The incident has cast a pall over the busy festive travel season, raising serious safety concerns for the many Zimbabweans who rely on cross-border road transport.
