Gweru – Three Midlands State University students have been charged with subverting constitutional government after allegedly distributing fliers opposing potential moves to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028.
The students – Milton Muchayana (21), Anenyasha Moyo (22) and Langton Muhoma (22) – were arrested on August 8 at the MSU Gweru Campus and appeared in the Gweru Magistrates Court on Friday facing serious charges under Section 22(2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Prosecutors allege the trio conspired to create and distribute 12 fliers containing messages intended to incite public violence against the government. The allegedly inflammatory materials bore slogans including “Call for rebellion against 2030 vision” and “If humanity must thrive, then individuals are compelled to out manoeuvre others.”
According to court documents, the students used two mobile phones, an HP laptop and an Epson printer to design and print the material. These items were seized as exhibits for the upcoming trial.
The three students, represented by lawyer Reginald Chidawanyika from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, had spent 14 days in detention before being granted bail by Masvingo High Court Judge Justice Regis Dembure.
The case emerges amid ongoing political tensions surrounding a push by some ZANU-PF members to extend President Mnangagwa’s term from 2028 to 2030, despite the constitutional two-term limit. The President has repeatedly stated that he is a constitutionalist and does not intend to serve beyond the prescribed limits.
The trial of the three students is expected to proceed in the coming weeks as the debate around presidential term limits continues to dominate political discourse in Zimbabwe.
