Kwekwe – Former Zimbabwe Warriors forward Abbas Amidu has been arrested in a significant drug bust along the Kwekwe to Kadoma Highway, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed on Thursday.

The 29-year-old footballer, whose real name is Tumai Matsika, was taken into custody alongside Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga, 41, for allegedly trafficking a large quantity of marijuana.

According to police authorities, the arrest occurred on October 3, 2025, when officers intercepted a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle registration number AGP 6776.

“The ZRP confirms the arrest of soccer players, Tumai Matsika, also known as Abbas Amidu (29) and Reuben Kudzai Mhlanga (41) for drug trafficking,” the police stated in an official post on X.

“The two were found in possession of 750kg of dagga valued at USD75,000-00 in a silver Honda Shuttle vehicle along Kwekwe – Kadoma Highway.”

The massive haul of cannabis, with an estimated street value of US$75,000, represents one of the larger drug seizures in recent months. The same police report also mentioned a separate, smaller drug bust at the Trabablas Interchange.

The arrest marks a dramatic fall from grace for Amidu, whose football career once showed considerable promise. The forward was part of the CAPS United team that clinched the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League title in 2016, with his impressive performances in the CAF Champions League earning him a move to Saudi Arabian club Al Wehda in 2017.

However, his international career faced challenges, including a premature release from Egyptian club Entag El-Harby in 2018 after just seven months. The club had announced at the time:

“Entag El Harby have announced they are releasing nine of their players, namely Momen Gaber, Afrotto, Mohamed Mohsen Leila, Ahmed Sherwyda, Ahmed Saidy, Mohamed Essam, Ahmed El-Ish, Mohamed Khalifa and Abbas Amidu.”

Amidu also had a brief stint with South African giants Kaizer Chiefs in 2012, though he departed without making an official appearance for the club due to injuries.

The former international now faces serious legal consequences, as drug trafficking charges in Zimbabwe carry severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences.

Police have not yet announced a court date for the two suspects as investigations continue.
