HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a strong warning against individuals it accuses of exploiting the recent Kuwadzana children’s tragedy to commit crimes and incite public unrest.
In a press statement released on October 5, the police named Josphine Mutongi as a central figure in an alleged scheme to solicit money from the public. According to authorities, Mutongi is using social media to mobilize funds through EcoCash and InnBucks accounts “under the guise of assistance to the families.”
The police have moved swiftly to discredit these efforts, stating,
“The families of the victims have disowned Josphine Mutongi who is openly using social media platforms to create confusion among Zimbabweans.”
Furthermore, the ZRP directly addressed circulating allegations about the nature of the children’s deaths, a key point of public anger. The statement sought to clarify the official position, noting,
“For the record, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has no evidence that one or all of the victims had missing body parts.”
To provide definitive answers, the police confirmed that a full post-mortem is scheduled for October 6, 2025, in Harare.
“The results will be made public in consultation with the families,” the statement assured.
The warning also extended to those planning demonstrations.
The ZRP sternly cautioned “anyone or groups who are agitating for violence or illegal gatherings that the law will definitely take its course without fear or favour.”
Appealing for calm and due process, the police urged the public to “respect the privacy of the grieving families and in the process allow the Police to find out what exactly happened in this sad incident.”
The situation remains under investigation as the community awaits the findings of the official post-mortem.
