HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday hosted over 5,000 members of the Johane Masowe eChishanu church at the State House for a special prayer service focused on national unity and spiritual reflection.
The event, which was organized by First Lady Amai Auxilia Mnangagwa, saw the President acting as the guest of honor. In his address, President Mnangagwa emphasized the role of faith in the nation’s trajectory.
“In times of challenge, it is our faith and unity that will see us through,” President Mnangagwa told the congregation.
“My government remains committed to SUPPORTING the spiritual welfare of all our citizens, as it is the bedrock of our national development.”
The high-profile prayer meeting, however, occurs against a backdrop of significant internal turmoil within the ruling ZANU-PF party. Political analysts suggest the public display of unity contrasts sharply with recent behind-the-scenes conflicts.
This follows a dramatic confrontation in which Vice President Constantino Chiwenga reportedly presented a dossier of corruption allegations to the party politburo. The dossier targeted prominent figures including fuel mogul Kudakwashe Tagwirei and controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
A source within the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated,
“The VP was pushing for immediate arrests, creating an unprecedented standoff. The situation is volatile.”
The internal crisis is believed to have forced President Mnangagwa to cancel his scheduled trip to the United Nations General Assembly last week, amid fears that the named individuals could be arrested in his absence.
The political infighting escalated further when former legislator Themba Mliswa launched a series of corruption allegations against Vice President Chiwenga, signaling a deepening factional war.
Political analyst Ruvimbo Gumbo commented,
“This public prayer service is a clear attempt to project an image of stability and control. However, the reality is a government grappling with internal decay and a crippling economic crisis that it seems unable to solve.”
The nation continues to face severe economic challenges, with rampant inflation and widespread poverty affecting the majority of citizens.
Critics argue that the awarding of multi-million dollar government tenders to a small circle of elites has exacerbated the economic turmoil, leaving the government with few viable solutions.
