GWANDA – An audit of the Gwanda Municipality for the 2024 financial year has uncovered significant governance lapses, revealing that three council vehicles are not registered in the local authority’s name.
The discovery was made by the Office of the Auditor General, led by Acting Auditor General Rheah Kujinga. According to the official report, the municipality failed to present the registration books for the vehicles in question during the audit process.
The audit highlighted the severe risks associated with this oversight. Kujinga noted that the situation leaves the assets vulnerable to misappropriation and could result in the council losing the vehicles in the event of legal disputes, as it cannot conclusively prove ownership.
In her official recommendation, the Acting Auditor General directed the Municipality to urgently regularize the situation by registering all vehicles in the council’s name to safeguard public property.
In response to the audit findings, the Gwanda Municipality management acknowledged the irregularity.
They have committed to addressing the issue, confirming that the process to change the vehicle ownership into the council’s name is underway.
