The Zimbabwean football community is in mourning following the passing of former Dynamos captain Angirai “Durawall” Chapo.
Details surrounding his death remain unclear, but the announcement was confirmed by Dynamos Football Club on their official Facebook page.
“Dynamos Football Club would like to express its heartfelt condolences to the Chapo family, Dynamos supporters, friends, and the entire Zimbabwean football fraternity on the passing of our former captain, Angirayi ‘The Durawall’ Chapo. Legends do not die, they rest. Rest easy, skipper,” the club stated.
Chapo was a stalwart for Dynamos during the 1980s and 1990s, and also represented the Zimbabwe national team, the Warriors, during that period. His dedication and leadership earned him lasting respect among fans and players alike.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) paid tribute to the late football icon:
“ZIFA joins the entire football fraternity in mourning the sudden passing of Angirayi ‘Durawall’ Chapo, a true icon of Zimbabwean football. His untimely departure is a painful loss to his family, friends, teammates, and the wider football community across our nation.”
ZIFA described Chapo as more than just a player, highlighting his resilience, courage, and leadership as captain of Dynamos. They also noted his humility, kindness, and deep connection to his community in Mufakose.
“Though he has played his final match, the legacy he leaves behind, that of commitment, leadership, and an unbreakable spirit, will forever remain part of Zimbabwe’s football history,” ZIFA added.
Angirayi “Durawall” Chapo’s contribution to Zimbabwean football will be remembered with great respect, and his memory will continue to inspire future generations.
Chapo’s passing marks the end of an era for Zimbabwean football. As the nation mourns, his legacy as a leader, a fighter, and a true servant of the game will live on, inspiring future generations of players and fans alike.
