The Harare Magistrates Court has sentenced a 23-year-old kombi driver to 30 months in prison for a violent confrontation with a police officer that ended with the officer being thrown from the moving vehicle.
Malvern Last Chiutsi was convicted for assaulting a police sergeant and resisting arrest during an incident on September 4.
The court heard that the confrontation began when Chiutsi sped through a red light at the intersection of Leopold Takawira Street and Jason Moyo Avenue. After ignoring orders to stop, a police sergeant managed to board his Nissan NV350 kombi to effect an arrest.
Instead of complying, Chiutsi accelerated, initiating a high-speed chase through the city streets. Upon reaching Avondale, the driver briefly stopped, assaulted the officer, and then—with the assistance of his conductor—forcibly shoved the sergeant out of the moving vehicle before driving off.
In delivering the sentence, the magistrate emphasized the severity of the offence.
“Attacking a law enforcement officer in the line of duty is a serious crime that undermines public order and will be met with the full force of the law,” the magistrate stated.
A representative from the Zimbabwe Republic Police commented on the case, saying,
“This sentencing sends a strong message that violence against our officers will not be tolerated. We are committed to ensuring the safety of those tasked with upholding the law.”
The conductor involved in the incident remains at large, and police investigations are ongoing.
