The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has officially launched a new phase for Zimbabwean rugby with the appointment of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to steer the sport through a transitional period.
This follows the recent dissolution of the Zimbabwe Rugby Union’s (ZRU) National Executive Board and Committee amid governance and financial accountability concerns.
The IMC, comprised of experienced professionals in governance, finance, and rugby administration, will serve a one-year term with six-month reviews.
The committee is tasked with restoring financial accountability, ensuring uninterrupted competition at domestic and international levels, preparing for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, initiating a constitutional review, safeguarding athlete welfare, and securing technical and financial support from World Rugby and Rugby Africa.
IMC Members include:
Mr. Paddy Zhanda as Chairman, Ms. Latifa Kassim, Mr. Gareth Crabbe, Mr. Wellington Magaya, Mr. Godwin Jaws Murambiwa.
SRC Chairman Dr. Nathaniel Madyanyika highlighted that the establishment of the Interim Management Committee marks an important turning point for Zimbabwean rugby, ushering in fresh direction and renewed purpose.
“A new chapter for Zimbabwean rugby”
He emphasized that the committee’s mandate will revolve around building a solid foundation through good governance and transparency, while also aiming to elevate the country’s competitiveness on the international stage.
“Stability, accountability, and success on the world stage”
Dr. Madyanyika also reassured all stakeholders that rugby activities at both local and international levels will not be disrupted, maintaining continuity throughout this transitional period.
“All domestic and international rugby programmes will continue uninterrupted”
The SRC emphasized that the IMC is a transitional body, to remain in place until fresh elections are held in line with the ZRU constitution and the SRC Act.
In the meantime, the Commission is urging all stakeholders, players, clubs, and fans, to unite behind the IMC and support Zimbabwean rugby through this period of change.
“This is a crucial moment for the sport in our country. We call on everyone involved in rugby to rally together for the growth, stability, and success of Zimbabwe rugby,” the SRC said.
The establishment of the Interim Management Committee signals a decisive step toward restoring stability and credibility in Zimbabwean rugby.
With a clear mandate, government backing, and support from World Rugby and Rugby Africa, the IMC’s success will depend on unity among players, clubs, and fans.
If stakeholders rally together, Zimbabwe rugby can emerge stronger, more accountable, and better prepared for the road to the 2027 World Cup.
