Plumtree– The BuKalanga Liberation Movement (BLM) has voiced strong opposition to statements made by Mthuthuki Hikwa during the King Mzilikazi commemoration in the United Kingdom, accusing him of misrepresenting the identity of the Kalanga people.
In an open letter, BLM Secretary General Masimba Mbongolwane Dube condemned Hikwa’s assertion that the BaKalanga are Ndebeles, calling it a “blatant disregard for the history and identity of the Kalanga people.”
A Call for Cultural Integrity:
Dube emphasized the distinction between the BaKalanga and Ndebeles, firmly stating,
“The BaKalanga are not Ndebeles and will never be, whether by association or otherwise.”
He pointed out that the historical presence of Ndebele chiefs among the Kalanga disrupted the social fabric of the community, underscoring the necessity for cultural and linguistic liberation.
The BLM official highlighted the historical significance of Kalanga land, asserting that regions such as Matebeleland and the Midlands are originally BuKalanga territories.
He criticized Hikwa’s use of the Ndebele language at the UK event, deeming it ‘a slap in the face to the BaKalanga people.’
Disputing Historical Narratives:
Dube also took issue with Hikwa’s invocation of Chief Hikwa, arguing that the chief does not share the sentiments expressed by Hikwa.
The BLM characterized Hikwa’s comments as opportunistic and disconnected from the broader Kalanga community, calling for a formal apology and public retraction to correct the misrepresentation.
“The Kalanga kingdom is very much alive, guided by our recognized chiefs, and external claims cannot diminish our heritage,” Dube stated, reinforcing the idea that the Kalanga identity is distinct and vital.
Ongoing Cultural Sensitivities:
This controversy highlights ongoing sensitivities surrounding cultural identity in Zimbabwe and the broader Southern African region.
Historical disputes over land, leadership, and ethnic affiliations remain highly charged topics, and the BLM’s response reflects a growing assertion of Kalanga identity in the face of perceived encroachments.
As the conversation about cultural identity continues, the BLM’s stance serves as a reminder of the importance of recognizing and respecting diverse histories and identities within the region.
The call for cultural integrity resonates not only within the Kalanga community but also among other ethnic groups navigating the complexities of historical narratives and contemporary politics.
In an era where identity politics play a significant role in shaping social dynamics, the BLM’s firm stance against Hikwa’s statements underscores the need for respectful dialogue and acknowledgment of each group’s unique heritage.
The call for an apology and retraction from Hikwa reflects a broader desire for recognition and respect for the Kalanga people and their history.
