Bulawayo – A gripping new preview from the ‘Amplifying Girls’ Voices through Digital Arts Project TV’ has been released, offering a raw and emotional look into the dangerous world of secret teenage relationships, parental discipline, and heartbreaking betrayal. The film, featuring characters brought to life by Percy Soko, Sithabile Moyo, Vuyani Maphosa, and Zenzo Nyoni, promises a hard-hitting narrative that resonates with contemporary youth issues.

The story centres on Zie, a 17-year-old girl played by a promising new actress, who finds herself trapped in a web of lies. After spending a weekend with her boyfriend, Vuyani, she is desperate to return home, fearing the wrath of her father, who she describes as “an animal.” Her fear is well-founded; her father had already issued a stern warning:

“I don’t want to see her. If I see her, I will remove her from the house.”

Zie’s initial lie about a school trip quickly unravels when her father, portrayed with intimidating force by Percy Soko, discovers the truth. The situation escalates when it’s revealed that Zie sought money from Vuyani for morning-after pills, highlighting the serious consequences of their unprotected intimacy. Vuyani, whose parents are overseas, ignores the consistent advice of his uncle, Zenzo Nyoni, the family gardener, who constantly urges him to

“condomize and play safe.”

The confrontation is inevitable. A furious Mr. Soko forces Zie to lead him to Vuyani’s house, where he delivers a severe last warning to the boy and threatens to report him to the police, given Zie’s status as a minor.

Amidst the anger, a voice of reason emerges from Zie’s mother, Thabile, played with warmth and concern by Sithabile Moyo. In a poignant scene, she tries to bridge the gap with her daughter, advocating for communication over punishment.

“I will talk to her, and talking to her is far much better than what you wanted to do,” she tells her husband.

In a heartfelt moment, she assures Zie,

“Sex is nice with the right person. I want you to make informed decisions.”

However, the final blow comes not from her parents, but from her boyfriend. In a devastating twist, Zie returns to Vuyani’s house to retrieve her phone only to find him with another girl, shattering her trust and leaving her in tears at home, truly alone facing the consequences of her actions.

The film appears to be a powerful initiative from the Amplifying Girls’ Voices project, using digital storytelling to explore critical themes of communication, safe sex, peer pressure, and the emotional turmoil of adolescence. It serves as a stark cautionary tale for teenagers and a compelling mirror for parents, questioning the effectiveness of harsh discipline versus open dialogue.
