Urban Renewal: Harare City Council Taps City Parking for Major Mbare Musika Revamp

HARARE – In a significant move to reclaim and modernize a key city asset, the Harare City Council has officially engaged its wholly-owned subsidiary, City Parking, to undertake a comprehensive, world-class upgrade of the Mbare Musika bus terminus.

The decision follows the council’s successful reclamation of the facility from politically-connected vigilante groups and space barons who had illegally taken control of the terminus. Council spokesperson, Stanley Gama, confirmed that the project is now underway, leveraging internal resources for the renewal effort.

“City of Harare’s Mbare Musika urban renewal project is now in motion after a long wait,” Gama told Zim GBC News.

“City Parking, a company 100% owned by council, shall finance and manage the project as council looks inward and opts to use internal resources.”

This is not the first attempt to rehabilitate the terminus. Gama revealed that a similar mandate was given to City Parking in 2014 but was sabotaged by groups who benefited from the chaos.

“Sufficient security measures have been put in place to safeguard the equipment after the vigilante groups back then vandalized the facility,” he assured.

The ambitious project scope is designed to transform the face of the area. It includes:

· Upgrading existing toilets, paving, boundary walls, waiting sheds, and sitting areas.
· Constructing new shops around the terminus.
· Installing electronic boom gates, solar systems, and enhanced security.
· Landscaping and beautifying the surrounding areas.

Gama emphasized the dual benefit of the initiative, stating,

“This project is set to transform the face of Mbare township and improve revenue generation for council owing to the investment by the council-owned entity.”

The move signals a firm commitment to restoring order and fostering development at one of the city’s most vital transport hubs.
