Bulawayo – A 31-year-old man from Woodville, George Nyawo, appeared before Tredgold Magistrates Court facing charges of assault after allegedly attacking his brother-in-law with the back of an axe during a violent domestic altercation.
According to the State’s case, the incident occurred on 29 July 2025 at a residence in Hopelyn where the complainant, Arthur Dube (31), resides.
“Nyawo reportedly confronted Dube at his home and physically assaulted him, striking him once on the left cheek and again on the back of both legs using the blunt side of an axe, while another unidentified suspect held Dube by the collar”.
The attack is believed to have stemmed from a personal dispute. The complainant was referred to hospital but did not seek medical attention.
Nyawo is charged under Section 89(1)(a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23], which criminalises assault likely to cause bodily harm.
This case highlights:
- Rising Community Violence – Even residential disagreements are turning violent, showing the need for better conflict resolution approaches.
- Need for Medical Follow-Up – Victims often skip medical treatment after violent incidents, which can delay justice and worsen health outcomes.
Authorities have condemned the violent conduct and reminded the public to resolve disputes peacefully or through appropriate legal channels.
“The matter is still under investigation, with the second suspect still at large”.
