CHEGUTU – A high-speed police pursuit along the Chegutu-Chinhoyi Road ended fatally on Friday, with one suspected armed robber gunned down and two of his alleged accomplices arrested following a violent hijacking.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the suspects, Valentine Dipuka, Tafadzwa Mumba, and Tinashe Chimukono, are linked to a brazen robbery near the Newfound Turn-off in Gadzema, Chegutu.
According to police reports, the trio, travelling in a Honda Fit, intentionally rammed into a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus. They then allegedly threatened the driver with machetes before making off with over US$200,000.
“The police received a tip-off on September 19 which led them to the suspects in the Chegutu Central Business District,” the ZRP said in a statement.
“A chase ensued as the suspects attempted to flee from the police.”
The situation escalated dramatically when the suspects refused to stop, forcing officers to open fire. The chase concluded only after the suspects’ vehicle was successfully immobilised.
“Dipuka and Chimukono were arrested on the spot, while Mumba sustained gunshot wounds and later died upon admission at a local hospital,” the police statement added.
The incident has prompted a strong warning from law enforcement authorities to criminal elements across the country.
“The ZRP warns criminal syndicates that confrontation with law enforcement agents will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The police have urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activities to help maintain law and order.
