The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has formally announced the reopening of its investigation into controversial businessman and socialite, Wicknell Chivayo, a move that follows a dramatic internal confrontation within the ruling party over alleged state and party capture.

In a statement released on social media platform X, the anti-graft body confirmed the revival of the stalled case, citing a renewed mandate to pursue all individuals implicated in corruption.

“The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) hereby informs the public that investigations into matters involving Mr. Wicknell Chivayo have been formally reopened,” the commission stated.

The statement acknowledged past difficulties, noting that “progress in this case had been delayed due to the complex process of securing critical evidence as well as external interferences that hindered the timely interviewing of the suspect.”

This development comes on the heels of an explosive politburo meeting where Vice President Constantino Chiwenga allegedly accused fuel magnate Kudakwashe Tagwirei of siphoning billions of dollars intended for the Zanu PF party.

Chiwenga reportedly claimed the funds were instead used to buy influence through a network of benefactors that included Chivayo, who recently made headlines for donating luxury vehicles and cash to party officials.

The ZACC statement directly aligns its actions with the public positions of the nation’s leaders, signalling a high-level push for accountability.

“In line with His Excellency, President E.D. Mnangagwa’s reaffirmation that there are no ‘sacred cows’ in the fight against corruption, and consistent with the public commitment by Vice President C.G.D.N. Chiwenga that accountability is imminent, ZACC is ensuring that previously stalled cases, including those involving individuals with political connections, are being actively revived and pursued,” the commission said.

ZACC further reiterated its “constitutional mandate to act without fear, favour, or prejudice,” promising to provide the nation with further updates as the investigation proceeds.

The reopening of the Chivayo case is being viewed by political analysts as a direct consequence of the escalating power struggle within Zanu PF, pitting factions aligned with President Mnangagwa and Vice President Chiwenga against each other.

It signals a potentially significant shift in the enforcement of anti-corruption measures against powerful figures with political ties.
