BULAWAYO – In a significant step towards enhancing urban cleanliness and promoting environmental stewardship, the renowned ice cream company, Great Flavours, has donated ten branded refuse bins to the CITY of Bulawayo.

The handover ceremony, held in the CITY , was attended by the Mayor of Bulawayo, Senator David Coltart, who hailed the contribution as a vital partnership between the CITY’s business community and local government.

The donation is part of a broader initiative to address waste management challenges and present a cleaner, more attractive CITY to both residents and visitors. Cassandra Mahala, the Marketing Manager for Great Flavours—a company with branches across the country—expressed her honour in representing the organization.

“It’s an honour standing in front of you donating on behalf of Great Flavours,” Mahala stated.
“I hope this donation will inspire other organizations to come on board on this initiative of keeping our country clean.”

She emphasized the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility, adding

“It’s an honour to be here and we look forward to giving more to the community we live in.”

Mahala also extended gratitude to the Bulawayo CITY Council for facilitating the opportunity to contribute to the CITY ‘s well-being.

In his address, Mayor David Coltart underscored the profound impact of what might seem like a simple donation. He argued that cleanliness is directly tied to the CITY ‘s economic prosperity.

“This is a big donation, it’s not a small donation,” the Mayor asserted.

“A clean place will attract tourists too in Bulawayo; tourists will not go to a dirty place, they will go to a clean place.”

Mayor Coltart drew international comparisons to drive home his point, noting,
“Tourists and investments are fickle, and investors will go to a place that is cleaner. In Singapore and Shanghai, people are fined if they litter the CITY that’s why it is clean.”

He praised the efforts of the CITY ‘s health department, specifically mentioning Cleansing Superintendent Nkanyiso Ndlovu, but stressed that a collective effort is required.
“Cleaning or cleanliness starts with ourselves,” the Mayor said, highlighting that the council “cannot do it without the support of businesses.”

He further commended Great Flavours for its leadership, expressing hope that the gesture would influence other businesses to follow suit.

The Mayor also pointed out the mutual benefit, as the branded bins serve as free advertising for the company, constantly reminding the public of its community involvement.

Accepting the donation on behalf of the city’s health department, Cleansing Superintendent Nkanyiso Ndlovu expressed his appreciation.

“It is our pleasure to be receiving this,” said Ndlovu.
“We appreciate Great Flavours. We want to turn waste into something valuable and we want to move forward, and these are some of the steps of moving forward as a CITY.”

The donation marks a collaborative stride towards a sustainable future for Bulawayo, demonstrating how public-private partnerships can play a crucial role in tackling urban challenges and fostering a culture of cleanliness.
