President Mnangagwa Confirms 2028 Elections, Shuts Down Postponement Agenda

Political Correspondent

HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has firmly declared that the next harmonised elections will be held in 2028 as constitutionally mandated, directly countering a strong lobby within his own party to postpone the polls until 2030.

The President’s statement, delivered during a Zanu PF Central Committee meeting at the party’s headquarters in Harare, puts to rest a contentious debate recently fueled by his own allies, notably outspoken Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, who had publicly claimed the 2028 elections would not take place.

Emphasising the need for party unity and strategic planning, President Mnangagwa told the committee,

“It is important that we introspect as a party of the bigger picture that we must win the 2028 harmonised elections.”

He called for candid discussions within the party’s highest decision-making body, stating,

“The Central Committee must have robust and frank discussions to foster solutions in unity to realise our common vision. We must therefore do our best to foster strategies of shaping our country.”

The President’s unambiguous commitment to the constitutional timeline is seen as a significant move to quell internal factionalism and public speculation about an extended tenure, reinforcing the official position that the nation’s electoral calendar will proceed as scheduled.
