Harare Gynecologist Faces Mounting Allegations of Negligence, Extortion and Patient Abuse

Health and Environment

HARARE – A prominent Harare-based gynecologist, Dr. Chirume, is facing serious allegations of medical negligence, extortion, and patient abuse, with multiple complainants coming forward to detail accounts of substandard care and financial exploitation.

The allegations, which have sparked public outrage and calls for regulatory intervention, center on claims that Dr. Chirume ignored standard medical protocols, demanded excessive payments, and created an environment of fear and mistreatment for vulnerable patients.

Several patients who spoke out described feeling powerless when dealing with the medical practitioner. One woman shared her traumatic experience:

“He ignored my reported symptoms, only for my condition to worsen, and then he billed me for additional unplanned treatments I never consented to.”

Another complainant highlighted concerning financial practices, stating,

“He demanded payment in advance—even before providing a detailed diagnosis or obtaining proper consent. This complete lack of transparency is unacceptable for any medical professional.”

Health watchdog groups and civil society organizations are urging immediate action. They are calling on the Health and Allied Professions Council of Zimbabwe (HAPCZ) to launch a comprehensive investigation into Dr. Chirume’s conduct, including his patient care practices, billing procedures, and consent protocols.

Legal experts note that if substantiated, these allegations could constitute serious breaches of medical ethics and potentially lead to both criminal and civil liability.

“The pattern described by multiple patients suggests systemic issues that demand regulatory scrutiny,” one legal analyst commented.

The controversy has raised broader concerns about the safety and reliability of maternal and women’s health services in Harare, particularly for economically vulnerable patients who may feel unable to challenge medical authorities.

Dr. Chirume has not yet publicly responded to the detailed allegations. As the story gains traction in local media, public pressure is mounting on regulatory bodies to ensure accountability and protect patient rights within Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
