BULAWAYO – Former Highlanders Chief Executive Officer Brian Busani Moyo was on Tuesday found guilty of defrauding the historic football club of US$2,000 in a controversial player transfer deal involving two Bulawayo Chiefs FC players.

Bulawayo Provincial Magistrate Richard Ramaboea convicted Moyo after a trial that exposed financial irregularities in the December 2024 transfer of striker Never Rauzhi and midfielder Malvern Hativagoni. Moyo’s bail was not revoked, and he was remanded out of custody until Wednesday for sentencing.

The court heard that initial negotiations had pegged Rauzhi’s transfer fee at US$25,000 and Hativagoni’s loan fee at US$15,000. After the first deal collapsed, the clubs eventually agreed on US$13,000 for Rauzhi and US$1,000 for Hativagoni.

However, former Bulawayo Chiefs administrator Mandigora, who has already pleaded guilty and been sentenced in the same case, revealed a scheme to inflate the transfer fees.

He testified that Highlanders were told the deal cost US$23,000, while Bulawayo Chiefs were informed it was worth US$18,000. The US$5,000 difference was allegedly split between the two officials.

Mandigora admitted to pocketing US$3,000 while Moyo received US$2,000 from the fraudulent scheme.

The Highlanders executive had authorized payment for the transfers with the requirement of dual signatures for withdrawals, but the court found that proper procedures were bypassed.

Moyo was represented by lawyers Victor Kucherema and Thamani Ncube of Wallace Law Chambers during the proceedings.

The case has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwean football circles, highlighting the need for greater transparency in player transfers.

The sentencing on Wednesday will determine whether Moyo faces imprisonment or other penalties for his role in the fraud scheme that compromised the financial integrity of one of Zimbabwe’s most storied football clubs.
