Beyond Riches: Zimbabwean Girls Prioritize Dependability in Partners, Raising Complex Questions

Bulawayo – A new study reveals that young women in Zimbabwe are increasingly valuing reliability and emotional consistency over financial wealth when choosing romantic partners, a trend experts say highlights both evolving priorities and underlying vulnerabilities.

The research, which explores the relationship choices of young women in their late teens and early twenties, suggests that a man’s dependability is a powerful motivator, particularly for those from unstable or challenging home environments.

For 19-year-old Tariro from Cowdray Park, the desire for a steady presence was a primary factor.

“I wasn’t looking for a rich man; I wanted someone steady, someone I could count on,” she explained.

“When you don’t have that at home, you look for it elsewhere.”

This quest for a dependable figure, however, can lead to complex and sometimes risky dynamics. The study indicates that the very vulnerability that drives the search for stability can also lead some young women into early sexual relationships.

Nyasha, 20, reflected on her own experience, stating,

“He was consistent, he showed care…I felt seen in a way I didn’t at home. That attention and care made me feel secure, and that connection became very intense very quickly.”

Analysts point to Zimbabwe’s challenging socio-economic context as a key factor, where young women navigate immense pressure to balance personal aspirations with harsh realities. The desire for a better life and “good things” often becomes intertwined with the search for a reliable partner, influencing critical life decisions.

“Dependability matters more than money to me,” affirmed Rumbidzai, a 22-year-old university student.

“A man who is present and responsible is more attractive than one who is wealthy but flaky. But I’ve seen it… this need for security can lead some girls to compromise their goals or get into situations they aren’t ready for.”

The trend has raised concerns among community advocates about the potential for exploitation and the impact of early relationships on the education and long-term prospects of young women.

While acknowledging that valuing reliability is a positive trait, experts stress that strengthening family support systems and empowering young women with greater agency are crucial to ensuring their pursuit of stability does not come at a personal cost.
