Crimes and Courts
MASVINGO – Robert Matola, an outspoken student leader at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) and the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) provincial spokesperson for Masvingo, has filed an urgent application at the High Court challenging his suspension from the university.
Matola, a part 4.1 Media and Cultural Studies student, was suspended for two semesters earlier this year following disciplinary hearings. The university accused him of inciting students to protest and making “disparaging remarks” against management on a WhatsApp group, charges stemming from his activism against mandatory medical aid payments and other administrative issues.
However, Matola contends that the suspension is unlawful and politically motivated. He is being represented by prominent human rights lawyer, Advocate Omen Mafa, and is set to appear at the High Court on September 15 for a determination on his case.
“This suspension is a clear infringement on my constitutional rights to academic freedom, association, and expression,” Matola said in a statement.
“It is an attempt to silence dissenting voices and cripple student activism on campus.”
The legal challenge has ignited fresh momentum within ZINASU’s Masvingo chapter, with leaders hailing it as a critical turning point. They argue the case represents a broader fight against oppressive systems in higher education across Zimbabwe.
This incident is not isolated. Earlier this year, Midlands State University (MSU) suspended four students for three semesters and expelled a fifth for allegedly recruiting for an unregistered organization, a move widely criticized by activists.
“Institutions of higher learning should be nurturing democratic engagement and critical thinking, not punishing it,” a ZINASU representative stated.
“We see this legal challenge as a stand for all students whose rights are being trampled.”
The case is being closely watched as a test for student rights and administrative accountability within Zimbabwe’s university system.
