BULAWAYO – Four Ecosure agents employed by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe appeared at the Tradegold Magistrates Court facing fraud charges after they allegedly pulled off a sophisticated scam to steal money from unsuspecting Ecocash account holders.

According to the court’s case, the accused Manuel Makuvise (28), Kudzanai Learnmore Tavaziva (28), Kudzaishe Shadreck Chakanyuka (42), and Joshua Nyariwana (34) were arrested following a tip-off and a police investigation.

“The suspects were operating as Ecosure agents based at Econet Willowvale in Harare.”

The case came to light after the complainant, Eliah Nkomo (51) of Gwanda noticed suspicious activity on his Ecocash account.

“On 29 April 2025 the accused persons targeted Nkomo’s account and using insider access to subscriber details created a fake identity card with his personal information.”

The fake ID which carried the photo of one of the accused was then used to process a SIM card replacement. This gave the suspects full control of Nkomo’s Ecocash line.

“They went on to transfer and withdraw US$1,946 from his account.”

All four suspects face charges of fraud as defined in Section 136 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

This case highlights the serious risks to data protection and the misuse of personal information. It shows the importance of protecting personal data as anyone can become a victim if their details are exposed.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since warned businesses and individuals to strengthen internal security systems and keep a close watch on employees’ activities to prevent similar crimes.
