In the vibrant and ever-evolving music scene of Harare, a new name is resonating through the studios and airwaves with a uniquely transnational sound: Donn.
Behind the stage name is Emmanuel Chirunga, a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose journey from the UK to Zimbabwe and from church drums to professional studios is as compelling as his music.
Born in the United Kingdom, Donn’s life took a pivotal turn at age nine when his family moved to Zimbabwe. It was here that his deep-rooted connection to music truly began.
“I was introduced to the world of music through, obviously, church ,” he recalls with a laugh,
His innate talent was immediately apparent behind a drum kit, where he held down the rhythm for his congregation until he was 19.
That foundational decade provided more than just Sunday service experience; it was a crucible for his musical education. Along the way, he instinctively picked up the piano and guitar, building the arsenal of a true one-man band.
His artistic influences paint a picture of a modern, globalized soundscape. While grounded in the rhythmic patterns of gospel, Donn’s ears were attuned to the smooth, infectious vibes of Afrobeats giants like Wizkid and the relatable lyricism of Zimbabwe’s own Takura.
His high school years were soundtracked by the raw, DIY energy of SoundCloud rappers, further expanding his artistic palette.
By 16, the calling was undeniable.
“I knew I wanted to be a musician,” Donn states, “but I had absolutely no idea where to start .”
That initial uncertainty is a distant memory. He took the leap at 17, translating years of instrumental mastery and absorbed influence into his own original music.
Today, Donn stands at the forefront of a new wave of Zimbabwean artists.
He is not just participating in the local Afrobeats movement; he is aiming to redefine it. His sound is a seamless fusion—the polished, international appeal of West African Afrobeats infused with a distinctively Zimbabwean sensibility and the authentic, soulful depth of an artist raised on gospel.
With a clear-eyed vision and the talent to back it up, Donn’s mission is unequivocal: to conquer the Afrobeats space in Zimbabwe and, ultimately, take his sound global.
