Bulawayo – Residents of Cowdray Park are facing a worsening transport crisis that has disrupted daily commutes, heightened safety risks, and intensified calls for urgent reform.
Unreliable kombi services, inconsistent fares, and corruption have left many unable to reach workplaces, access essential services, or attend family obligations.
During a recent journey, passengers boarded a kombi expecting the fare to be $0.50. After paying with a R10 note, the conductor reacted rudely and aggressively, demanding R15, a fare that was unreasonable and communicated disrespectfully.
At one point, he even instructed passengers to disembark, causing confusion and frustration. Four passengers were affected, including three women and one man.
“This is the third time they have treated us this way,” said a commuter, highlighting the personal toll of the ongoing transport challenges.
“They didn’t treat us well. They should have informed us politely, not act rough,” she said.
The conductor involved operates the Tshova Mubaiwa kombi with number plate AGL 4323 and is a familiar figure in the area, suggesting that such behavior is recurring.
“I know the driver; this happens mostly during his trips,” said the commuter.
Commuters have expressed frustration over repeated fare disputes and the lack of professional conduct from some transport operators.
Fare inconsistencies remain widespread, with commuters frequently paying above normal rates. Safety concerns are also a major issue, with reports of drivers operating under the influence of alcohol.
Unlike in the past, when operators were identifiable through uniforms and fleet numbers, many now conceal their vehicle plates, making accountability more difficult. Residents are calling for visible branding, uniforms, and proper training in ethics, safety, and customer care.
Calls are also growing for the introduction of a fixed pricing system to bring stability and fairness, as fare confusion continues to frustrate commuters.
The transport crisis has real consequences on livelihoods, with many residents missing work, losing income, and living under constant fear of unsafe travel conditions.
The community, operators, and authorities now face the urgent task of building a reliable, affordable, and safe transport system.
The situation in Cowdray Park has become a test of accountability and commitment to public welfare, as residents continue to demand dignity, safety, and dependable service.
