Bulawayo has seen a disturbing trend of individuals converting their homes into unregistered, makeshift garages for car repairs.
These informal workshops pose significant risks to both human health and the environment, operating outside the purview of regulatory bodies like the city council.
Hazards Associated with Illegal Home Garages
- Environmental Pollution
Fuels, oils, and chemicals used in car repairs can contaminate soil and groundwater if not handled properly. Improper disposal of waste materials like used oils, batteries, and tires exacerbates environmental degradation.
Health Risks
Exposure to hazardous substances like solvents, paints, and vehicle exhaust fumes can lead to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health problems. Inadequate ventilation in home settings amplifies these risks.
Fire and Explosion Hazards
Flammable liquids like gasoline and oils, combined with potential ignition sources, create a significant fire risk in residential areas.Working under vehicles without proper lifts or support structures increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
Operating outside formal regulatory frameworks means these garages often bypass necessary safety and environmental standards.Despite being illegal, the number of such home garages appears to be increasing, suggesting a need for heightened awareness and enforcement.Neighbors may be exposed to noise, fumes, and other hazards without their consent or adequate protection.
“Financial pressures drive us to seek informal, unregulated repair work, it’s hard to making a living these day. Some of us are qualified mechanics but unemployed so this becomes our means of living” said Mtho, who refused to give out his real name
Some of the issue that might be contributing to such businesses is lack of Awareness. There is Limited understanding of environmental and health risks associated with improper car repair practices. Also they is Inadequate Enforcement with Potential gaps in monitoring and enforcement by local authorities.
Addressing the Problem
- Strengthening Regulations and Enforcement: City councils and relevant authorities need to balance regulation with support for legitimate, safe businesses.
- Public Awareness: Educating communities about risks and promoting safe practices.
- Promoting Formalization: Encouraging operators to formalize their businesses with proper training and compliance.
Proper management of car repair activities is crucial to mitigate risks. This includes adherence to safety protocols like using personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring ventilation, and safe disposal of hazardous waste .
