HARARE – Flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo has once again ignited public debate with his extravagant spending, announcing the purchase of luxury vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for Prophet Uebert Angel and his family—a move that appears to directly challenge Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s recent condemnation of such ostentatious displays by the so-called “Zvigananda.”
In a lengthy social media tribute shared on Saturday, Chivayo praised Angel as “a man of many gifts” who combined “charisma, academic excellence and generosity,” hailing him as a pioneer of Zimbabwe’s prophetic movement.
The businessman revealed he had purchased a brand-new 2025 Lexus GX550 valued at US$210,000 for Angel’s wife, Prophetess Beverly Angel.
“Please choose and spec any latest 2025 Rolls-Royce of your choice with a bespoke colour, interior and design. I will process payment within 48 hours,”
Chivayo declared to the clergyman, further pledging to buy a Bentley for Angel’s son, Prophet Seer Angel, later this year.
The lavish gifts come just weeks after Vice President Chiwenga publicly castigated the flashy spending habits of businesspersons with political connections, specifically criticizing the “Zvigananda” phenomenon for flaunting wealth while many Zimbabweans struggle with economic hardships. Chivayo’s very public display appears to be a direct defiance of the Vice President’s call for modesty and responsible wealth distribution.
Uebert Angel, who serves as Zimbabwe’s ambassador-at-large to Europe and the Americas in addition to leading the Spirit Embassy ministry, has been a controversial figure.
He was prominently featured in Al Jazeera’s “Gold Mafia” documentary, where he was recorded claiming he could “move $1.2 billion easily” through his diplomatic immunity and allegedly offering access to President Mnangagwa for substantial facilitation fees.
The timing of Chivayo’s extravagant gesture has raised eyebrows among political analysts, with some viewing it as a bold statement of defiance against the growing criticism of such public displays of wealth amid the country’s economic challenges.
