The incident, which involved multiple vehicles, happened near the Dema turn-off, sending panic through nearby communities and stranding countless motorists.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden impact and confusion.
“It happened so fast. I heard a loud screech of tires and then a huge bang. Several cars collided, and people immediately started rushing to help,” said Tinashe Chikwava, a kombi driver who was a few vehicles behind the crash.
“The road was completely blocked.”
Another witness, Ms. Anna Marimo, a vendor operating nearby, echoed the sentiment.
“It was terrifying. We are just praying for those involved. The emergency services arrived quickly and have been working hard to get people to safety.”
While the exact number of casualties and the severity of injuries remain unconfirmed, emergency personnel are on the scene attending to the wounded. Ambulances have been seen transporting individuals to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Traffic police are also present, managing the flow of vehicles and beginning preliminary investigations into the cause of the accident. Authorities are urging motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes to allow clearance and recovery operations to proceed unhindered.
