Zimdancehall Star Chillmaster Banned from Driving for Nine Months in Homicide Case

Crimes and Courts

MBARE – Popular Zimdancehall musician Kudakwashe Gift Hombarume, widely known as Chillmaster, has been banned from driving for nine months after a magistrate reviewed his initial sentence for culpable homicide.

The ruling was delivered by a Mbare magistrate this week, following a directive from Judge President Mary Zimba-Dube to reassess the penalty, which was initially deemed too lenient.

Chillmaster was convicted in May on charges of culpable homicide and driving without a license. His original sentence included a US$200 fine for driving without a license and 210 hours of community service for the culpable homicide charge.

The review has now resulted in the additional driving ban, a move that underscores the judiciary’s stricter stance on road traffic offenses.

Legal experts say the review signals a shift toward more stringent penalties for such violations.

“The Judge President’s intervention highlights the seriousness with which the courts are now treating traffic offenses, especially those resulting in loss of life,” said a court official who preferred to remain anonymous.

Fans and followers of the artist have expressed mixed reactions to the news on social media, with some supporting the court’s decision while others believe the community service was sufficient.

Chillmaster is yet to make a public statement regarding the new ruling.
