BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) are investigating a fatal road traffic accident that killed a pedestrian and injured several others on Khami Road near the Flyover on Tuesday evening.
Police said the tragic incident happened around 7 PM on August 26. The deceased, a man believed to be in his 40s, was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a speeding Toyota Hiace. The driver was identified as Bhekinkosi Sibanda (35) of Pumula North.
“The pedestrian fell in the middle of the road and died on the spot from multiple fractures and severe head injuries. The driver fled the scene without offering any assistance,” said Deputy Press and Public Relations Officer Thandekile Ndlovu.
At that moment, another Toyota Hiace travelling in the inner lane and carrying four passengers slowed down to avoid the body. It was then hit from behind by a Toyota Alex driven by Dumile Ndlovu (19) of Pumula South. The impact caused the minibus to overturn, injuring two passengers.
Bhekinkosi Sibanda later returned to the scene, pretending to be a witness. However, a police inspection of his vehicle revealed a shattered windscreen, a damaged mirror, and blood stains, leading to his arrest. He has been charged with culpable homicide. Dumile Ndlovu was charged with negligent driving.
Police have urged drivers to be cautious, avoid speeding, and always stop to assist after an accident.
“We encourage drivers to exercise proper lookout when driving and also to stop instead of running away after an accident. They should render assistance in any way possible,” police said.
Families missing a loved one are encouraged to visit United Bulawayo Hospital for possible identification of the deceased.
