MASVINGO – In a shocking case of gender-based violence, a Masvingo man has been sentenced to over three years in prison after a brutal attack on his ex-wife that culminated in him pushing her into the path of an oncoming vehicle.
Sadam Rutsvara (36) was convicted and sentenced on Monday by the Masvingo Magistrates Court on charges of physical abuse and attempted harm.
The court heard that on August 7, 2025, Rutsvara confronted his ex-wife, Tichayeva Mutusva, near Chikato Police Station. After she declined his pleas for reconciliation, he physically assaulted her and then shoved her towards an oncoming car in a fit of rage.
This violent outburst followed an incident the previous day, August 6, where Rutsvara had allegedly poured alcohol on Mutusva, insulted her, grabbed her by the neck, punched her twice, and stole her money.
A court official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated,
“The nature of the attack was exceptionally dangerous and could have easily resulted in a fatality. The sentence reflects the court’s firm stance against such reckless and violent behaviour.”
The case has sparked renewed calls from advocacy groups for stronger protections for survivors of domestic violence.
“No one should have to endure such terror, especially from a former partner,” said a representative from a local women’s rights group.
“This sentencing sends a clear message that such acts will be punished to the full extent of the law.”
Police have encouraged victims of domestic abuse to come forward and report their cases, assuring them of protection and justice.
