Sungura Star Alick Macheso Apologizes, Covers Medical Bills After Bouncer Attacks Journalist

Arts and Entertainment

HARARE, – Sungura music legend Alick Macheso has issued a formal apology and covered all medical expenses for Zimpapers journalist Richard Muponde, who was allegedly assaulted by the musician’s bouncer, Lloyd Gweshe. The incident has sparked widespread conversation about artist responsibility and violence against media personnel.

Through his publicist Tich Makahamadze, the celebrated musician known as “Baba Sharo” expressed regret over the altercation while clarifying that the incident occurred outside his direct supervision during a bar gathering rather than at an official performance.

Official Statement from Macheso’s Camp

“We have heard about the issue and it’s sad how it happened,” stated Makahamadze in an official communication.

“As a group, we condemn violence but, on this occasion, we were nowhere near this brawl.”

The publicist further explained the context of the incident:

“The brawl happened at a bar and, to be honest, there was nothing we could have done about it. If it had happened during our show, surely, we could have intervened and acted swiftly, but in this case it would be unfair to blame our leadership or Baba Sharo because people were involved in a bar brawl over an issue they know better.”

Pursuit of Legal Justice

Despite Macheso’s apology and covering of medical costs, Muponde continues to seek legal recourse against Gweshe through formal channels. The journalist maintains that accountability should extend beyond financial compensation for the physical altercation.

The incident has highlighted the ongoing tensions between public figures’ security details and media professionals attempting to conduct their work, raising questions about appropriate security conduct during both official and unofficial appearances.

Industry Implications

This episode has sparked broader discussions within Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry regarding the responsibilities of artists for their staff’s actions during both scheduled events and personal time. Many industry observers are watching how this case develops, as it may set precedents for how similar incidents are handled in the future.

Macheso’s prompt response in covering medical expenses has been noted as a positive step toward conflict resolution, though the ongoing legal proceedings indicate the complexity of such situations.
