BULAWAYO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police(ZRP) have launched a murder investigation after a 61-year-old man died from injuries sustained in a violent attack in Nguboyenja earlier this month.

The victim, David Mafu of Burombo Flats, was seated on a one-metre-high concrete slab near 6th Avenue Extension on 13 August 2025. He was suddenly struck with an unknown object by an unidentified man reported to be mentally challenged.

According to Deputy Press and Public Relations Officer, Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu, the impact caused Mafu to fall and sustain external head injuries.

“He was rushed to Mpilo Hospital, where his condition deteriorated. Sadly, he passed away on 23 August due to his deteriorated condition from external head injuries,” she said.

As the investigation continues, police are urging families with mentally ill relatives to ensure they receive regular medical attention.

“Families with mentally ill members must play a role in ensuring their loved ones receive consistent medical care and support”.

When untreated, mental health conditions can escalate, potentially leading to self harm or others.

This case serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance, compassion, and active engagement with mental health services to safeguard both the individual and the community.

The public is also advised to take precautions when interacting with individuals displaying erratic behaviour.

”Neglecting mental health does not just hurt one person, it puts the whole community at risk.”
