The award-winning actress, renowned for roles in ‘Soul City’ and ‘Zone 14,’ died on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy spanning over five decades.
JOHANNESBURG – The South African entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe. She passed away on Saturday, 23 August 2025, at the age of 75, just four days after celebrating her birthday.
The sad news was confirmed in a joint statement by the Nyembe family and the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, which praised her as “one of South Africa’s most varied entertainers.” While the official cause of death has not been disclosed, it was known that the acclaimed actress had been facing significant health challenges.
Earlier this year, Nyembe revealed she was suffering from spinal problems and had been using a wheelchair. The statement from the family and department acknowledged that she had “been unwell for some time.”
Nyembe’s career was nothing short of legendary, spanning an remarkable 53 years on stage and screen. She was a familiar and beloved face in South African households, known for bringing strength and depth to her characters.
Her extensive repertoire included starring roles in some of the country’s most iconic television series, such as the groundbreaking health drama Soul City, the popular SABC1 comedy Zone 14, the pan-African business thriller Jacob’s Cross, and the hit Mzansi Magic telenovela Isibaya. She also had a memorable role in the gritty teen drama Yizo Yizo.
The timing of her passing has struck a particular chord with fans, as it occurred exactly one year after the death of another beloved acting icon, Connie Chiume. This poignant coincidence led to an outpouring of condolences online, with many social media users expressing that the two legends are “now reunited in heaven.”
