HARARE – The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has pledged to strengthen its fight against the proliferation of counterfeit goods in the Zimbabwean market, announcing plans for tougher enforcement and new policies aimed at protecting consumers.

The commitment was delivered by the Ministry’s representative, Wilson Gowora, on behalf of Permanent Secretary Dr. Thomas Utete Wushe during a workshop on compliance with the Consumer Protection Act.

“Counterfeit measures are central to our national vision of building a prosperous, fair, inclusive, and sustainable economy by 2030,” Dr. Utete Wushe stated in his speech.

He outlined that the government’s strategy is built on three core priorities: ensuring strict compliance with consumer protection laws, promoting ethical practices within the wholesale and retail sectors, and directly confronting the trade in counterfeit products.

“These are not abstract ideals, but operational imperatives that shape consumer trust, investor confidence, and economic stability,” he emphasized.

To modernize the sector and align with international standards, the government is developing two key policy instruments: the Retail and Wholesale Sector Policy and the Consumer Protection Policy.

Echoing the Ministry’s concerns, Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, highlighted the severe risks posed by counterfeit goods, particularly fake medicines.

“The issue of fake medicines is particularly dangerous. As the police, we are working closely with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to curb this menace,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

He called on policymakers to address legislative loopholes that are exploited by traders of fake products and issued a stern warning to offenders.

“Those who trade, supply, or manufacture counterfeit products will face the full weight of the law. We will enforce it without hesitation.”

The renewed government focus comes amid growing public concern over the safety and authenticity of products available in local markets.
