As the by-elections approach, it becomes necessary to have the public vote for the councillor they want.

Following MDC Alliance President Douglas Mwonzora’s move of recalling some members of Parliament and Councilors, some wards were left without Councilors representing their communities. For instance, Pumula has to choose a new Councillor for their ward after Mwonzora recalled their former councillor.

Pumula was not the only affected suburb.

In Mutare urban, councillors were recalled leaving the Mayoral seat vacant.

Mayoral elections to fill the vacancy left by Cllr. Blessing Tandi who was recalled were held in Mutare yesterday.

The elections were held at Mutare Civic Center.

After the elections, Cllr. Advocate Simon Chabuka of Chamisa’s Citizens for Coalition for Change (CCC) won the mayoral seat after being voted by 6 councilors against Mwonzora’s candidate Cllr. Farai Bhiza who garnered 5 votes.

When results were announced Cllr. Bhiza collapsed and had to be attended to by paramedics. He was later ferried to hospital.

Bhiza had been acting mayor.

Having tasted the seat of power, perhaps Bhiza assumed that he had been performing to expectations and that would put in better contention for a permanent mayoral position.

Having recalled councillors and members of parliament who pledged allegiance to Chamisa, and were elected on Chamisa ticket, Mwonzora faces an uphill task in the forthcoming March by-elections.

Mwonzora had tried to convince the electoral that he is the leader of the opposition. He assumed leadership of the MDC-T party with the assistance of the courts. He went to accept money from Treasury through Political Parties (Finance) Act.

Cows are now coming home to roost.

Mwonzora’s candidates are now falling by the way side. The party that he leads failed to field candidates in some constituencies for March elections.

Some of his preferred candidates refused to stand for MDC-T in the same by-elections.
