Zimbabwe’s Under-20 men’s volleyball team is set to spike their way onto the continental stage at the African Nations Volleyball Championship in Egypt, building on the momentum created by the country’s golden U19 squad.
The U19 side recently dominated the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games, sweeping every opponent in straight sets to clinch gold.
They opened with a 3–0 demolition of Malawi, followed it up with another 3–0 rout of Angola, and outplayed South Africa twice, first in the group stages and again in the final, with commanding 3–0 victories.
Zimbabwe Volleyball Association Vice President Brian Manuel hailed the U19 champions for their clean sheet and consistency, noting that their performance laid the foundation for the U20 team’s continental challenge.
“In the Region 5 Games, we played against Malawi and beat them 3–0. We also played against Angola and beat them 3–0. Then we faced South Africa in the group stage and beat them 3–0. In the final, we met South Africa again and beat them 3–0″.
The U20 squad earned their Egypt berth through the U19 team’s stellar run, marking a natural progression from regional dominance to continental competition.
“Our boys earned this opportunity after an excellent performance in the recent Region 5 Games, where they won gold and didn’t even drop a set,” Manuel explained.
Recognising the players’ skill at the net, attacking prowess, and defensive strength, officials are focused on keeping the squad together and giving them exposure at higher-level competitions.
“The boys are very, very good and very promising, to a point that we want to keep them together, we want to expose them more”.
“Their main ticket, rather, would then be that of winning the Region 5 Games. They performed exceptionally, and now we want them to compete at the highest level in Africa,” he concluded.
To support this journey, the Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has organised a fundraising dinner on 29 August at Cresta Jameson Hotel in Harare, bringing together volleyball legends, stakeholders, and fans to rally behind the rising stars as they prepare to serve, spike, and block their way through Egypt.
With their flawless Region 5 sweep as a springboard, Zimbabwe’s U20 squad is ready to serve, spike, and block their way through the African Nations Championship in Egypt. Backed by national support and a foundation of proven talent, the young spikers have the skill and determination to turn regional success into continental triumph.
