MUTARE, Zimbabwe – A 22-year-old man tragically drowned in a fish pond at Mutare Teachers’ College this week while attempting to rescue a duck that had fallen into the water, police confirmed.

How the Incident Happened

The deceased, identified as Simbarashe Mlambo, was carrying out routine duties with a colleague, Yolanda Hove, gathering ducks near the college’s fish pond when the accident occurred.

“While they were driving the ducks towards the forum, one of the ducks fell into the fish pond. This prompted Mlambo to jump in to rescue the duck, but unfortunately, he failed to swim and drowned,” said Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka.

Emergency Response & Investigation

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Sakubva attended the scene and retrieved Mlambo’s body, which was taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, though early indications suggest it was a tragic accident.

Community in Mourning

The college community and Mlambo’s family have been left in shock by the sudden loss. Fellow students and staff described the incident as “heartbreaking” and “unexpected.”

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of entering unfamiliar waters, even with good intentions.
