The style trend of wearing pants low on the hips, commonly known as “sagging” or “dropping trousers,” has a complex history and multiple motivations.
Originating in prison culture, where belts were often banned and clothing was ill-fitting, the style was initially adopted as a symbol of solidarity with incarcerated individuals and as a form of rebellion against authority.
However, this style of dressing can also be seen as a sign of ignoring modesty and humility. Wearing sagging trousers can be perceived as immodest and attention-seeking, prioritizing fashion trends over values that are important in many cultures and faiths.

According to Allan, a theologian, with the bible perspective, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 teaches that our bodies are not our own—they are temples of the Holy Spirit, and we are called to honor God with both our body and spirit.
“The scripture reminds us that how we present ourselves physically matters to God. Wearing trousers in a way that exposes underwear or body parts can be seen as dishonoring the body and showing disrespect for the temple God has given us. It’s not modest, and it doesn’t reflect holiness or discipline,” he said
In the 1990s, hip-hop and skater culture popularized the trend, using it as a way to express freedom and counter-culture. The style became a mainstream fashion choice, with some wearing it as a statement of individuality and others simply finding it comfortable.
Sagging often originates from rebellion or cultural trends that don’t align with God’s call for dignity and self-respect. As believers, we are urged to dress and carry ourselves in a way that reflects God’s presence in us not just in spirit, but also in our physical appearance. So, dropping trousers can be viewed as dishonoring the sacredness of the body that God owns and paid a high price for.
However, the trend has also been driven by practical considerations, such as larger bellies or loose-fitting clothing, and psychological factors, like seeking attention or coping with stress.
The trend has evolved over time, with celebrities like Justin Bieber popularizing the sagging of skinny jeans in the early 2010s.
In contrast, dressing modestly and humbly can have numerous benefits. It can promote self-respect, confidence, and a sense of dignity.
To be honest, many women would be embarrassed to introduce a partner who wears sagging pants to their family and community.
“As a lady, I couldn’t even consider marrying a man who wears sagging trousers, it would embarrass me in front of my parents and the community,” Nobukhosi Ncube said.
Modest dressing can also show respect for others, particularly in formal or professional settings. By prioritizing modesty and humility in their dress, men can demonstrate their values and character, and promote a positive and respectful image.

In my honest opinion, I believe that people who sag their trousers are either misguided or simply spoiled. This trend is most common among boys from urban areas. If you go to rural communities, it’s very rare to see anyone dressed like that. To me, it reflects a form of indiscipline that seems more prevalent in cities.
“I think one possible reason is that many of these individuals have not been exposed to the harsh realities of life. Some are from privileged backgrounds where everything is handed to them, so they don’t learn responsibility or discipline. In some cases, they come from wealthy families, and because they don’t need to work for anything, they become careless,” he said.
“Others may be involved in drugs or other destructive habits. Because, frankly, no mentally sound man should be comfortable walking around with his underwear or backside exposed. So I see this behavior as rooted in urban indiscipline, lack of exposure to real-life struggles, and sometimes peer influence”.
Today, the act of sagging pants is a complex phenomenon with multiple motivations, from fashion statements to practical considerations and psychological factors. While it may have started as a symbol of rebellion, it has become a mainstream fashion choice.
Ultimately, it is essential to consider the implications of our fashion choices and strive to present ourselves in a respectful and dignified manner.
