Israeli Military Blames ‘Technical Error’ After Gaza Strike Kills 10, Including Six Children

Gaza Strip – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has admitted to a “technical error” after a missile strike hit a water collection point in Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, killing 10 Palestinians—including six children—and wounding 17 others, according to local officials.

The IDF said it had targeted an Islamic Jihad militant but that a malfunction caused the missile to land “dozens of metres from the intended target.” The military stated the incident is under review, adding that it “works to mitigate harm to uninvolved civilians as much as possible” and “regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians.”

Dr. Ahmed Abu Saifan, an emergency physician at Al Awda Hospital, confirmed receiving 10 bodies, with six children among the dead. Witness Ramadan Nassar described a harrowing scene, saying around 20 children and 14 adults were waiting to fill water containers when the strike occurred.

“Everyone ran, but some fell severely injured,” he said.

The attack was part of a broader wave of Israeli strikes across Gaza on Sunday, with local health officials reporting 19 fatalities. In Zawaida, another strike on a residential home killed nine, including two women and three children, according to Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.

The IDF claims to have hit over 150 targets in Gaza in the past day, following another deadly incident near an aid center in Rafah on Saturday. The Red Cross reported 31 killed, while the IDF said it only fired “warning shots” and was “not aware of injured individuals.”

The conflict, triggered by Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel—which killed 1,200 and took 250 hostages—has now claimed over 58,000 Palestinian lives, Gaza’s health ministry reports, with women and children making up more than half the casualties.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has hinted at progress toward a ceasefire deal, but negotiations remain stalled over the issue of Israeli troop movements during any truce. Hamas still holds 50 hostages, with fewer than half believed alive.
