MOSCOW— Senior Russian officials have issued a stark warning that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s authorization of military strikes against Iran could escalate into a global conflict, with one top security official accusing Trump of having “started a new war” for America.
The fiery rhetoric came from Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, who mocked Trump’s reputation as a peacemaker.
“Trump, who came in as a peacemaker president, has started a new war for the U.S.,” Medvedev said.
“With this kind of success, Trump won’t win the Nobel Peace Prize.”
“Spiral of Confrontation” Could Lead to Global War
The warnings intensified as Leonid Slutsky, head of the Russian State Duma’s international affairs committee, cautioned that the U.S.-Iran conflict could spiral out of control.
“The consequences of the escalation threaten to go beyond the region,” Slutsky stated.
“Washington understands the inevitability of Tehran’s response. All this brings the spiral of confrontation to a new level and increases the risks of World War III.”
Global Tensions at Boiling Point
The Russian statements follow Trump’s decision to launch strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, a move that has drawn condemnation from multiple global powers.
Analysts fear Iran’s promised retaliation—potentially targeting U.S. assets or allies—could trigger a broader Middle East war, dragging in Russia, China, and other major powers.
Kremlin-linked political analyst Sergei Markov warned:
“If Iran responds asymmetrically—through proxies, cyberattacks, or closing the Strait of Hormuz—the U.S. will have to escalate further. That’s when regional war becomes global.”
U.S. Yet to Respond to Russian Warnings
The White House has not directly addressed Moscow’s latest remarks, but Pentagon officials have reiterated that the strikes were “limited and precise” to prevent further nuclear escalation.
However, with Tehran’s parliament already approving a bill to close the Strait of Hormuz—a critical oil chokepoint—fears of an economic and military crisis are mounting.
As global markets brace for potential oil shocks and military analysts warn of rapid escalation, the world watches anxiously to see whether Trump’s gamble will lead to de-escalation—or all-out war.
