Meteorological Services Department reported that Tropical Cyclone Batsirai will not affect Zimbabwe any time soon.

This comes against reports that Cyclone Batsirai is now North-East of Mauritius with an area of Tropical Disturbance to the South East.

“The Tropical Cyclone Batsirai has greatly slowed down its movement last night but confirms a South-West movement,” read the post.

With its shifted movement, Cyclone Batsirai has weakened a little since last night, reaching its minimum stage of a Tropical Cyclone.

By week end, Batsirai should be approaching Eastern coasts of Madagascar potentially still at a very dangerous stage with direct impacts on the rise for the central Eastern region of the big island of Madagascar.

With that, the Tropical Cyclone Batsirai and the Tropical Disturbance will not be affecting Zimbabwe.

However, the area of focus now is the cloud system in Botswana, which is the west of the country.

“The cloud band is moving eastward and is expected to sweep over Zimbabwe from Thursday evening 3 February 2022 into the weekend,” read the Meteorological Services Department post.

Therefore, thunderstorms and rain above 20mm is expected in all Matabeleland and Bulawayo Metropolitan provinces from Thursday evening into Friday and spread to the rest of the country from Friday into the weekend.

Weather forecast for Thursday will mostly be warm and cloudy with isolated afternoon thunderstorms expected in all Matabeleland, Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Midlands, Western parts of Mashonaland West, Western parts of Masvingo, Mashonaland Central and Mashonaland West.

The Met department advises that flooded rivers in the country may be a potential hazard even if it has not rained heavily in the area, heavy rains may have occurred upstream.

Meteorological Services Department head of forecasting James Ngoma said the public shall be alerted if any destruction is caused by the cyclone when it hits Zimbabwe possibly during the weekend.
