CHEGUTU, Zimbabwe – A devastating accident at Pickstone Mine on Tuesday claimed the lives of four artisanal miners, with a fifth left injured, authorities confirmed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that the miners became trapped in an open pit at the site.
The sole survivor of the incident is currently receiving medical treatment at Chegutu Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were also transported to the same hospital for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
“The ZRP confirms the tragic accident at Pickstone Mine where four miners lost their lives after being trapped,” stated a police spokesperson.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased during this difficult time. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse are underway.”
Separate Incident: Marondera Armed Robbery Arrest
In an unrelated event also on Tuesday, police in Marondera apprehended 27-year-old Emanuel Kapondo in connection with a violent armed robbery at a supermarket located on Main Street.
According to police reports, Kapondo and an accomplice, identified only as Tinashe Mhofu, allegedly assaulted an employee at the supermarket and stole their handbag before fleeing the scene. However, their escape was short-lived.
“A swift response by the victim’s colleague, aided by vigilant members of the public, led to the apprehension of Kapondo shortly after the robbery,” detailed a Marondera police official.
“This kind of community cooperation is vital in combating crime.”
Authorities confirmed they successfully recovered the firearm used in the commission of the crime. Kapondo remains in custody while police continue their manhunt for the outstanding suspect, Tinashe Mhofu.
“The recovery of the pistol is a significant development in this case,” the police official added.
“We are actively pursuing all leads to locate and arrest the second suspect.”
