Emakhandeni- BULAWAYO – As the City hosted national commemorations for the International Day of Families, Bulawayo police moved swiftly to quash rumors linking notorious gang “Abafana Bamabhemba” to a trio of violent robberies occurring hours earlier.

Police confirmed three connected attacks occurred within 90 minutes on Wednesday evening:
18:45 hrs near Makhosi Grounds: Two assailants struck a 52-year-old Emakhandeni man with a machete, stealing a Huawei Y9 phone, US$20 cash, and a wallet containing IDs (total value US$120).
19:30 hrs in Emakhandeni: A 40-year-old victim blocked a machete strike but suffered hand injuries. Robbers took US$70 cash, an ID, a red hoodie, tennis shoes, and a Huawei P8 Lite phone (US$200 value).
Shortly after near Apollo Shops: A 38-year-old Gwabalanda man was struck three times with a machete and once with a hammer. Stolen items included a Samsung J4 Core phone, US$100 cash, a satchel with clothing (US$250 value).

All victims reached Apollo Shopping Centre where ambulances transported them to Mpilo Hospital. Total stolen goods valued at US$570 remain unrecovered.

Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Bulawayo Provincial Press and Public Relations Officer, categorically denied gang involvement:

“We confirm these were isolated incidents by two unidentified individuals. There is no evidence linking them to ‘Abafana Bamabhemba’ or any organized group. We urge the public to avoid spreading unverified claims.”

Police issued renewed safety guidelines:
Avoid secluded paths, especially after dark
Report suspicious activity immediately
Share any information leading to suspect identification

Inspector Msebele emphasized:

“Community vigilance remains essential. We’re deploying resources to apprehend these perpetrators and ensure public safety.”

The alert comes as Bulawayo hosts nationwide International Day of Families events at White City Stadium, where Minister Monica Mutsvangwa earlier emphasized constitutional commitments to family safety. Police reassurances aim to prevent panic during ongoing commemorations through June.
